Field Trip

An Equal Opportunity Employer
Find out what helped RMSI achieve the number one spot as the ‘Best Company to Work For’ in two consecutive years

RMSI was ranked the number one company to work for in India by the Economic Times and Great Places to Work® Study for both 2007 and 2008. It also featured among the IDC-Dataquest IT Best Employers’ Survey 2008 at the high rank of 2nd. It also received the ‘HR Excellence Award’ for ‘Workplace Environment’ from Amity University. The company is obviously well-known for its people practices.

From its humble beginning in a two-room set-up to the current scenario, RMSI has come a long way. And they have done this through its innovative people-centric practices. RMSI has been able to nurture and institutionalise a work environment with a high focus on its people. To foster a culture to promote easy decisions by employees, the company has constantly reinvented itself to keep up with change.

RMSI develops innovative solutions that integrate geographic information with niche business applications. It provides comprehensive geospatial and software services to clients across the globe, in sectors ranging from land and property, disaster management and agriculture, and natural resources among others. Its core competency lies in the quantification and management of catastrophe-related risks. RMSI prides itself on being an equal opportunity employer and its practices are a true reflection of it. According to Ms. Gagan Jyot, Head-HR, “A high employee morale is indicative of a great work culture. At RMSI, we believe in empowering our people, nurturing their talents through well-evolved, innovative and RMSI-centric HR practices to create maximum value for all.” To cultivate the intellectual genre-de-vie, the company believes in an open and transparent communication among all its stakeholders. This is reflected in the company’s open door philosophy and flat hierarchical structure. People can walk up to the senior management and discuss ideas and thoughts to improve existing systems and processes. The company’s financials, business strategies and plans are discussed in open forums. The senior management invites employees from across the organisation to participate in formulating business strategies for the organisation. Talent is hired through an unique 5-step competency model, which focuses on skills, credentials, values and behaviours that are aligned to the core competencies of the company. 36% of the total hiring is done through employee referrals. Recruitment metrics not only include efficiency of the process and quality of hiring, but also the time spent by each candidate who comes for an interview. Fluctuating industry trends make it imperative for companies to keep their people updated with the latest technologies, and RMSI continuously strives to enhance the capability, creativity and credibility of its people. Their prime focus is on grooming Subject Matter Experts (SME) from within the company.

The company has a unique way of connecting with its employees by understanding their work-life balance needs. It organises in-house parenting, child psychology and relationship workshops for young parents. Employees’ children are also invited to participate in various forums. Flexible working hours for female employees, hiring spouses and providing concierge services go a long way in keeping employees motivated. Clubs like the Art and Music club encourage employees to exhibit their talents.

HR understands its role as a strategic business partner, so it speaks the language by measuring ROI – be it efficiency in recruitment, effectiveness of training, performance management metrics, retention rate or the health of its people practices. As part of CSR, the company, under the aegis of Helping Hands, works closely with NGOs who work for underprivileged children, and includes child education sponsorships, blood donation camps, etc. Despite the diverse workforce, RMSI continues to strive towards building a high performance driven environment that its people are proud of. As Ms. Jyot says, “This demographic diversity helps us enrich job content for our people and deliver value to our equally diverse clients in different business areas.” A great sense of belonging is inculcated through fair, transparent and ethical practices by raising the employees’ happiness. ‘We love it here’ is the greatest endorsement that an organisation can have from its people to create a positive work experience. And, RMSI has championed it completely.
